That Person is so Difficult – Transform Judgments and Uncover What’s Really Important
Speaker: Paige Hector | CEUs: 1.5 for ALL
We are socialized to express ourselves in a way that blames others and makes them wrong, even more so when we are hurt and need support the most. Alternatively, we judge ourselves and take on self-blame. These habitual ways of responding pose costly barriers to our relationships and capacity to collaborate with others and accomplish our goals. Nonviolent communication presents a powerful consciousness and a practical language for communicating without shame, blame and guilt, while revealing the full impact of other people’s words and actions on us. It offers specific ways to invite others to engage with us about the impact of their choices in a way that supports connection and trust. In this interactive session you will learn a process to effectively transform judgments and dramatically increase the chances that you will be heard and received with understanding and get the support you need.
General Session
Enjoying Excellence – Your Attitude Determines Your Success
Speaker: Dr. Earl Suttle | CEUs: 1.0 for ALL
This session focuses on how to develop more positive attitudes in the workplace and how to neutralize any negativity that may be lurking in the hearts or minds of your staff. We’ll look at five diseases of negative attitudes and five attitudes that help ease the way to success. You’ll also gain a better understanding of change in the workplace and become change-skilled in handling it.
Breakout Session 1
Master your Stress for Better Success
Speaker: Dr. Earl Suttle | CEUs: 1.5 for ALL
Mastering your stress means that it doesn’t manipulate you. The challenge is to learn not only how to master stress, but to make it work to your advantage. You will learn a simple stress mastery model that will help you self-manage any stressors in your professional or personal life. It will also help you identify the combustible areas of stress and turn them into fuel to increase your productivity, vitality, success and peace of mind.
Changing Culture by Growing our Capacity for Empathy
Speaker: Paige Hector | CEUs: 1.5 for ALL
Working in a health care setting can be stressful. The pandemic-driven conditions of exhaustion, uncertainty and fear have made it even harder. Health care staff, like any other human beings, need support and care to be able to continue to serve and be effective. Research has shown that we are experiencing an empathy deficit that is affecting our individual and collective wellbeing. The antidote is cultivating a culture of empathy to support staff, providers, residents and families in being heard, seen, acknowledged and cared for. This presentation teaches nonviolent communication consciousness and language skills to support clear and accurate dialogue based on what is important to us and understanding other people’s experience without having to agree with them.
Medicaid Eligibility Training
Speaker: Avis Tripilas and Dawn Helm | CEUs: 1.5 for SS, N, ADM
This session, led by representatives from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), will provide a comprehensive overview of Medicaid eligibility requirements for long-term care facilities. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the application process, financial criteria and necessary documentation for Medicaid enrollment.
Addressing Elopement in Senior Living
Speaker: Kari Brizendine | CEUs: 1.5 for SS, N, DH, ADM, ALMC
Elopement must be addressed, first with prevention, and then with action. We need to consider it possible for every client, not just those with dementia, to leave with a purpose or even inadvertently. Identifying those most at risk, planning activities that reduce boredom, eliminating triggers for the elopement behaviors and enhancing the communication methods used by staff are examples of proactive and preventative strategies. Planning for the actual elopement ahead of time can mean the difference between life and death to those in your care.
Breakout Session 2
The Awesome Power of Emotional Intelligence
Speaker: Dr. Earl Suttle CEUs: 1.0 for ALL
In this interactive seminar, participants will learn the power of becoming more emotionally intelligent in their work and personal lives. They will learn the benefits of identifying and managing their emotions to become more of a plus rather than a minus in their relationship management.
A New Approach to Refusal of Care and Challenging Behaviors
Speaker: Paige Hector | CEUs: 1.0 for ALL
Sometimes people do or say things that we find difficult to be around. In a health care setting this might look like refusing care, not following facility smoking policies and a variety of other behaviors. Even with increased recognition of trauma-informed care, the power dynamics in our work environments emphasize compliance and rules, which can make it difficult to shift to responding to behaviors in a way that does not compromise care. In this interactive workshop-style session participants will explore nonviolent communication (NVC), a communication process designed to radically shift the way we think and use language in everyday situations to enhance the quality of our relationships with residents. The presenter will identify communication blocks, such as right-wrong thinking and expressing our needs in the form of demands or judgements and offer a reframe for how providers might interpret difficult interactions with residents. Using common real-life examples and situations, participants will examine how NVC tools and practices can be integrated into facility processes and support staff in resident interactions. This presentation aims to inspire participants in all positions in the long-term care community to experience a paradigm shift for a more collaborative way of providing resident care.
Mitigating Risk – Drug Diversions
Speaker: Rob Leffler | CEUs: 1.0 for ALL

Non-Pharmaceutical Strategies to Mitigate Dementia-Related Challenges
Speaker: Kari Brizendine | CEUs: 1.0 for N, ADM, ALMC
Our elderly, our most vulnerable, have difficulty metabolizing and reacting to medications properly. The quick “go-to” of medication for those with dementia can cause unwanted results, at times life threatening implications. Reducing Antipsychotics by Honoring the Person and their Preferences
Speaker: Carmen Bowman | CEUs: 1.25 for SS, N, ADM
Half of us do not eat breakfast. Yet the number one driving force in every nursing home every day for getting people up is breakfast. When asked how they would react to being awakened to eat a meal they don’t want, people say “mad” and “angry.” Someone inevitably says they would be “non-compliant” and administered a psychotropic drug. Unfortunately, this is the norm and this is unnecessary drugs. This is restraining a person for the convenience of staff and adherence to the “almighty schedule.” This is non-compliance with federal requirements to honor a person’s preferences and choices. What we’ve called behaviors aren’t really at all. They are either coping mechanisms to something one doesn’t want and/or unmet needs; is anyone else crabby when they are hungry or tired? It’s time people become so well-known and preferences so well-honored that drugs are truly unnecessary.
Quality Assurance and the Activity Professional
Speaker: Alisa Tag | CEUs: 1.25 for AP, ADM
Quality assurance can be defined as “part of quality management focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled.” The confidence provided by quality assurance is twofold—internally to management and externally to customers, government agencies, regulators, certifiers and third parties. In today’s health care industry, measuring quality is a critical aspect of ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of the people serviced. Satisfaction can be measured by gathering feedback through surveys, interviews or focus groups can provide insights into whether the activities and programs offered are meeting residents’ needs and expectations. Engaging activities should contribute to the physical, emotional and mental well-being of residents. Monitoring changes in health status and overall happiness can provide valuable data. In this session, we will focus on ways to measure quality while using the critical element pathways instituted by CMS in all levels of care.
