TOPIC INFORMATION

Don’t Get Burned at Your Next Life Safety Survey
The session will examine all sections of the Life Safety and Healthcare Facilities Code and will provide forms, policies, and best practice guides for use by healthcare organizations.  Using real life examples and survey scenarios, participants will be provided a review of how these codes apply to long term care facilities, discuss code changes and the increased inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) requirements, and review common violations.

Fundamentals of Life Safety Code Compliance
It is always nerve wracking to undergo a LS SURVEY.  The Life Safety Code requires facilities to complete rigorous inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) for the many features of fire and safety protection. This session will review practical applications of the Life Safety Code and provide practical guidelines for a successful survey.  There’s a lot riding on compliance and being prepared is essential.

Infection Control – Water Management Plans – CMS Expectations
Healthcare facilities have complex water systems that may promote growth of pathogenic organisms if not properly maintained. For this reason, CMS feels that it is essential that healthcare facilities have a water management program that is effective in limiting Legionella and other opportunistic pathogens of premise plumbing from growing and spreading in a facility. This session will focus on best practices for water management and assessing and controlling Legionnaires’ disease.

DIAL’s Nursing Facility Life Safety/Fire Safety Update
This session will cover important updates on topics pertaining to life safety enforcement issues in Iowa nursing homes.  Inspectors from the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensure/State Fire Marshal’s Division will discuss life safety enforcement issues including recent findings during CMS federal monitoring surveys. There will also be a review of the new and the most frequently cited life safety code deficiencies in long-term care facilities. Plans of correction requirements and how to access reference documents and waiver forms on the State Fire Marshal’s website will also be discussed.

Assessing Your Emergency Preparedness Plan
Assessing your emergency preparedness plan is an ongoing process that is crucial to ensure the effectiveness and readiness of your response strategies in the face of unforeseen events. Regular evaluations contribute to a culture of preparedness, ultimately enhancing the safety and well-being of individuals and communities. We’ll discuss identifying historic weaknesses and gaps in plans, enhancing coordination and communication, and insight into continually improving your organization’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies.

Running an Effective Tabletop Drill
Conducting an effective tabletop drill is essential for testing and refining emergency preparedness plans in a controlled setting. The primary goal of a tabletop exercise is to assess the effectiveness of procedures, protocols, and strategies outlined in the plan. By simulating a scenario, organizations can identify strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in their existing plans. During this session we’ll discuss setting the stage to accomplish these goals effectively.

DIAL’s Assisted Living Facility Life Safety/Fire Safety Update
This presentation will focus on the latest life safety regulatory over-site for Assisted Living communities by the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensure/State Fire Marshal’s Division. Participants will review applicable state codes and standards, what to look for when maintaining the fire safety systems of a building and will be given an overview of fire safety and lock down plans. This session is designed to serve as a guide for A.L. Directors and maintenance staff in finding critical information to remain in compliance with the State Fire Code and the structural provisions of Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) 481-69.
