Course Description
This training will provide a complete overview of Medicare parts A thru D, and will cover nursing facility benefits and payment methods, as well as options to improve coordination and quality of nursing facility benefits for eligible individuals in both fee-for-service and managed care systems.
Discussion will focus on SNF level of care requirements, preadmission screening, facility expense, billing requirements, and Medicare reimbursement including deductible, co-insurance, RUG-IV, and the appeal process. We will also address Medicare Advantage plan hurdles and methods to overcome payment obstacles.
Learning objectives:
- Identify facility challenges involving all parts of Medicare (A, B, C, D)
- Enhance skilled documentation to meet medical necessity and level of care requirements.
- Determine proper PDPM reimbursement driven by the MDS.
- Address Medicare Advantage plan hurdles and methods to overcome payment obstacles.
- Appropriately apply consolidated billing principles
- Optimize reimbursement under PDPM, the SNF Value Based Purchasing Program, and the Quality Reporting Program

Jim Wilkes is the Vice President of Brighton Consulting Group, a company that delivers professional and technical reimbursement consulting services to skilled nursing & rehabilitation and long-term care providers in Iowa. Jim has more than 20 years-experience managing and consulting skilled nursing facilities on all aspects of financial and human resource record keeping. He has led more than 60 Iowa nursing facilities through the Medicare certification, claims, and cost report cycles since 1995 and provides valuable leadership to independently controlled organizations across Iowa.
