How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My sister worked in a nursing home and she encouraged me to apply to work as a CNA. I have worked in a nursing home ever since.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I like listening to the elders’ stories. I also take pride in taking care of their needs and knowing I made their day a lot better. When I leave for the day, I know that I’ve done my best for them.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
If you enjoy helping people, long-term care is the place for you. It’s hard work but when elders can’t do things for themselves, it makes all the hard work worth it.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I’ve learned a lot of medical terminology and topics that I never would have learned had I not worked in long-term care, such as diabetic care, exercises and medicines.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Reading, walking, listening to music and spending time with my granddaughters.
What is your favorite quote and why?
Always stay humble and kind.
