GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Administrator is a member of the health care team.
1. He/She is responsible for the daily operations of the nursing unit.
2. He/She ensures that care is delivered in accordance with the care modality of the unit.
3. He/She must demonstrate sound clinical judgement as well as demonstrate good managerial skills.
4. He/She is skilled, organized, and efficient in performing required nursing activities, as well as skilled in interpersonal communications.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Administrator of N&R is accountable to Virginia Gay Hospital CEO.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Administrator of N&R assumes the leadership role on the unit in determining priorities, supervising, guiding, and directing the Director of Nursing, Activity Department, MDS Coordinator, RN’s, LPN’s, CNA’s, OMT’s, Rehab Aides, and Floor Aides in the delivery of care.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to assist with lifting, turning, transferring, and walking patients. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Must be able to push carts, wheelchairs, and med. carts. Must be able to walk long distances on hard surfaces. Must be able to bend, stretch, twist, and stoop. Able to work 8 – 12-hour shifts. Must have adequate speech, hearing and vision to perform nursing duties as delineated.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Will be managing and supervising 40 beds of long-term care (NF) and the employees needed to staff this department. Will be working with residents that have varying diagnoses. Will be responsible for managing professional and non-professional staff as listed previously.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties are as listed below and as delineated in the Performance Review:
1. Responsible for the daily care of residents in the nursing unit; ensures quality care and satisfaction with service that’s provided to all types of residents. Assures resident safety.
2. Knowledge of state and federal regulations and the survey process.
3. Reviews resident charts for completeness and appropriateness.
4. Assists staff with resident cares – acts as a resource person – knowledgeable in procedures performed at the facility and assists the staff with their performance of such, provides Clinical Information Technology support within the department.
5. Responsible for preadmission screening of potential residents. Ensures PASRR and level of care completed for admissions as needed for payer and condition changes.
6. Responsible for daily staffing and proper delegation of tasks of the unit.
7. Uses continuous quality improvement processes to ensure quality of care and safety.
8. Ensures completion of preadmission screenings of residents.
9. Responsible for the performance appraisals of staff and any disciplinary processes that may occur.
10. Promotes cooperation between VGH and the medical staff.
11. Ensures adequate, functioning equipment, supplies and services are available for the residents.
12. Actively works with Human Resources to recruit and retain quality employees and coordinates orientation for new employees on the unit.
13. Oversees completion of the employee payroll and mandated staffing requirements to CMS.
14. If incumbent is a licensed RN, they must be able to function at the current expected performance of a staff RN’s job description and evaluation in order to assist in replacing absent staff on a PRN basis and in order to act as a resource person to staff. Shares in on call schedule.
15. Attends management seminars/classes as approved and directed. Oversees staff education.
16. Oversees rounds for physician, podiatric, dental, vision, and psychiatric services.
17. Must be knowledgeable of the Facility Compliance Plan and policies pertaining to the plan.
18. Routine review and revision of policies, ensuring facility has policies in place to provide safe and effective care while maintaining regulatory compliance.
19. Responsible for investigation and reporting of reported or suspected abuse/crime to appropriate entities.
20. The incumbent shall not have been convicted of a criminal offense related to health care or be listed by a
Federal agency as debarred, excluded or ineligible for participation in federally funded health care programs.
MARGINAL/INCIDENTAL DUTIES:
1. Able to operate all equipment found used in the facility and serve as a resource person to staff.
2. Have knowledge of and able to use current computer system.
3. Volunteers for extra duty.
4. Participates in community education and awareness programs.
5. Contributes to peer education through attending and conducting inservices.
6. Attends and participates in hospital committees as directed
7. Advances professional nursing career through college credit courses to advance degree.
8. Will perform other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Able to perform within scope of licensure for an RN (if applicable) and Nursing Home Administrator ( required). Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills. Possesses leadership abilities. Works well with other nursing and medical staff. Is organized and detail oriented. We expect employees while working to interact with patients, residents, families, visitors, co-workers, and supervisors in positive, cooperative, and supportive ways.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be able to work under stress when confronted with critical or unusual situations in which working speed and/or paying close attention are essential aspects of the job.
2. Must be able to demonstrate ability to remain focused on tasks and responsibilities of the position.
3. Must be able to prioritize tasks and able to be flexible as the needs of the facility require.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Current Iowa licensure as a Nursing Home Administrator. May hold an advanced degree but not required. Maintains current BCLS certification.
Graduation from a state approved nursing program as an ADN, Diploma, or BSN degreed RN is preferred, but not required. Previous experience in Medical, Geriatric and/or Long-Term care areas for RN is required.
