Kyla Gehring of the Views of Marion

October 14, 2021

Kyla Gehring began working at a nursing facility after hearing how much her sister loved the residents at the facility she worked at. As a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at the Views of Marion, Kyla loves learning from those she cares for. She was also a recipient of the 2021 IHCA Member Employee Scholarship. Congratulations Kyla, and we are excited to see you continue your education in health care!

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My sister worked in a nursing home and she always told me all the stories and how much she loved the residents. When I turned 17, I started working at the same nursing home while taking my CNA class through my high school.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Working in long-term care has so many benefits but what I like best is getting to know my residents. I love hearing the stories from when they were my age, how they grew up and how much the world has changed over the years.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Working in long-term care is the best, and it is such a rewarding job. You get to take care of the same residents every day. You also get the best advice from them and learn the ways to life.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned so many things from working in long-term care, but one huge thing is communication. Communication is key. Being a CNA, we are the eyes and ears on the floor. We are to report anything and everything abnormal to the nurse.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing? I enjoy spending time with friends and family, cooking up delicious meals and of course shopping.

What is your favorite quote and why? “You must tell yourself, ‘No matter how hard it is, or how hard it gets, I’m going to make it.’” – Les Brown.

This quote is perfect for being a CNA as some days are awful, but no matter what – I’m going to make it through the day.
