While in nursing school, Amy Riddle realized that working with geriatric patients was her passion. As the assistant director of nursing at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, she finds it rewarding to advocate for the residents to ensure they receive quality care.
How did you get interested in the long-term care profession?
I started working in long-term care after graduating from nursing school, and I realized right away that geriatrics is my passion. I have been working with geriatric patients my entire nursing career.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I love working with our residents and building relationships with them and their families. I love working with residents in their home and advocating for them both inside the nursing home and with outside entities to ensure they are getting the best care possible.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Long-term care, like every job, has it challenges, but the rewards of this job makes coming to work each day easy! Working with residents in their home and helping them through their journey is so rewarding. The residents have so much knowledge and teach us new things every day.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps outside of work?
I think one of the greatest things I have learned while working in long-term care is that every individual has a different story and a different reason for being there. These stories help us change the way we think and helps me realize the footprint I want to leave behind both as a nurse and as an individual.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy going to my son Keenan’s sporting events, spending time with my family and traveling to new places.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller
