Member Spotlight: Andrew Newton of Cedar Ridge Village

May 26, 2022

In addition to operating his own business, Andrew Newton serves as the plant operations director at Cedar Ridge Village in West Des Moines. Andrew finds it rewarding to help older generations and make a difference in the lives of others.

How did you get interested in the long-term care profession?
I was looking for part-time work to stay busy during slower times with my own business. I started at our sister community, Prairie Vista Village. I fell in love with the work I was doing immediately. Once Cedar Ridge was getting ready to open, I was asked to be the operations director there, and without any hesitation I said absolutely.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Every day I have the opportunity to help and ease the lives of the greatest generation that ever lived.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Every day when I go home, I feel like I have made a difference in someone else’s life. That truly is the best feeling in the world.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps outside of work?
I have learned to have more patience, to stop and smell the roses and that life is fragile and sometimes short. Take the time to enjoy in the little things in life.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy operating my business and spending time with my wife, son and two dogs.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“I know you’re chasing tomorrow, but don’t give up on today.” We sometimes wish tomorrow is here, but what can we do to make a difference today?
