Member Spotlight: April Murphy of PARC Hall at Palo Alto County Health System

August 13, 2020

April Murphy has been interested in long-term care ever since she was a child when she used to visit with the residents at the facility where her mother worked. As an activity coordinator at PARC Hall at Palo Alto County Health System, she enjoys getting to make an impact in the lives of others.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
Working in long-term care runs in my family. When we were young, my mom used to take us to the facility where she worked to visit the residents. We always really enjoyed it.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy knowing that I make a difference in the lives of the residents and others daily.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It is a very rewarding job where you help make a difference.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned to be patient, to listen and to always keep an open mind in every situation.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my family and our dogs.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“You are stronger than you seem, braver than you believe and smarter than you think you are.” My son is autistic, and we put this quote up in his room to remind him that he is special and can do anything.
