How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started in long-term care fresh out of college, working as an activity director.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part of working in long-term care is seeing the interactions and special moments our caregivers create for our residents. The joy that is created by doing the unexpected is rewarding for our caregivers, and our residents feel loved and important.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I have encouraged many young people to enter the long-term care profession specifically because it’s a rewarding career. It is a great place to start when you know you are interested in health care, but unsure of your path. Long-term care provides so many avenues for growth and education. The possibilities are endless.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
While working in long-term care, I have learned that our elders are the best teachers. The life span of someone who has seen so many changes – in the world and in their life – is amazing.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three children, following Iowa Hawkeye sports and spending time on any body of water.

What is your favorite quote and why?
Whether you think you can, or you can’t – you are probably right.
