Bethany Fratzke’s passion for serving others is evident through her wide range of experience in elder care. From working with the elderly waiver program, to her nursing home and continuing care retirement community (CCRC) experience, and her current role as the director at Bickford Assisted Living in Cedar Falls – Bethany finds purpose in working with the geriatric population and their families.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I got started in the long-term care profession by helping our local elderly be able to stay home through the elderly waiver program. From there, I transitioned to a nursing home and continued to support residents in services as they returned home after a skilled stay or moved into our continuing care retirement community (CCRC). I currently am the director at Bickford Assisted Living in Cedar Falls.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy working with the geriatric population, as well as supporting the families in the journey to help their loved ones.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
A career in long-term care is the most rewarding work I have ever done. I would encourage anyone who loves to help people to look toward this career path.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
The biggest career lesson I have learned that transpires to my personal life is to slow down and live in the moment. We live in a rushed “go-go-go” society, and so often we as humans just want to be heard and understood, to be sat with and have our hand held as we talk to each other.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy being outdoors with my husband and son. We enjoy camping and hiking. I also enjoy crafts and spending time with my family and friends.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Laugh as much as you breathe, love as much as you live.” This is my favorite quote because it reminds me to live in the moment, find happiness in every day and to laugh as much as possible.
