Beverly Michels became interested in working in long-term care when her daughter graduated high school. As a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Buchanan County Health Center’s Lexington Estate, she enjoys helping and being a source of comfort to those she cares for.
How did you get interested in the long-term care profession?
My daughter worked in the dietary department at another facility and we both signed up to take the course together when she graduated high school.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Helping people and getting to know their families.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
You work with great teams. We have our home family and then our work family. It’s a very good feeling when you can help others. Nobody’s goal in life is to grow up and live in a care center. My job allows me to come to work and make someone’s day a little brighter, put a smile on their face and be a listening ear. It’s a very rewarding feeling.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps outside of work?
Inside and outside of work, I always strive to be the best version of myself and be here for people in any capacity.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy going to church, gardening, landscaping, doing embroidery work, quilting, spending time with my dog and cat, as well as watching my grandchildren in school, at sporting events, showing their 4-H projects at the fair and dance. I have five children, one girl and four boys, and 19 grandchildren.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Your presence and absence mean something to somebody.” It is important to include others and make everyone feel welcome.
