Due to spending a lot of time with her grandparents as a child, Bo Geidel knew at a young age that she wanted to devote her career to caring for the geriatric population. As an administrator at Bedford Specialty Care / Corning Specialty Care, she works to provide this population with the best care possible.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with the geriatric population. That is what I was uses to, as I grew up spending a lot of time with my grandparents and their friends.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Making a connection with the residents and their family members.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Most people going into health care want to do pediatrics or work in a hospital setting, and I would encourage them to spend time in a long-term care setting to see what it is really about. It is much more challenging than what most assume, and in return, it can be more rewarding. We owe it to this population to provide them with the best care possible.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Patience and communication are the two biggest things that I have learned working in long-term care that have helped me outside of work as well.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Spending time with my family and riding horses.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss
This is my favorite quote as it speaks to anyone and everyone that has a career caring for people or animals. It is up to you to make a difference!
