Member Spotlight: Cheryl Lekwa of Longhouse-Northshire

August 12, 2021

Cheryl Lekwa began working in long-term care because she was interested in working with the elderly and the work hours were appealing. In her role with the laundry department at Longhouse-Northshire in Spencer, she enjoys spending time with and learning from the residents and those she works with.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
For the first time in my life I was without a job and saw an ad in the paper. I loved the hours and liked the idea of working with the elderly.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy the people I work with and the residents. Even a smile can make someone’s day.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
That the elderly are wise, funny, honest and can teach us a lot about life, history and endurance.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned to be patient with people and realize we all have different limitations and strengths.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love to cook and bake. I also love to travel to the national parks, the Great Lakes, zoos and anywhere that has nature or my grandkids. I also love to shop and visit with my friends or family.

What is your favorite quote and why?
A resident once told me, “You cannot be truly happy until you make someone else happy.” I love that quote because if we all lived by that, this world be a great place to live.
