Member Spotlight: Crystal Tharp of Accura HealthCare of Spirit Lake

July 15, 2021

Crystal Tharp received her licensed practical nursing (LPN) degree from Marshalltown Community College and currently serves as an LPN at Accura HealthCare of Spirit Lake. In this role, she enjoys creating long-term relationships with her residents and putting smiles on their faces.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I began my career in Newton, Iowa, as a brand new nurse and then transferred to Spirit Lake.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I learn new things every day and create long-term relationships with residents, staff and family.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Long-term care needs staff that care. It is great to see the smiles on your resident’s face when you take care of them.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
One big thing that I’ve learned is time-management skills.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy reading, watching movies and spending time with my family and friends.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Change is not pleasant, but change is constant. Only when we change and grow, we’ll see a world we never know.” I have had a lot of medical problems that have closed doors, and I have had to find a way to make new ones. It has taught me to take life as it comes and evolve with it.
