Dawn Feucht joined the long-term care profession at age 16 as a CNA. Forty-one years later, she is an LPN staff nurse at Longhouse-Northshire in Spencer, Iowa who values the family atmosphere within the facility.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started as a CNA in a long-term nursing home when I was 16 years old.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy the family atmosphere. You get to know your residents like family.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Adult seniors need care, compassion and patience. You learn their needs to make both your day and their day better. If you want a rewarding and guaranteed job, long-term care givers are very much in-demand and needed.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned how to see the comfort and peace of leaving this world.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my husband of 40 years, our two daughters and their husbands and my five grandchildren. I also enjoy camping and being involved with Kiwanis.

What is your favorite quote and why?
Free your heart from hatred – forgive. Free your mind of worries – pray. Live simply, appreciate what you have, give more, expect less.
