Member Spotlight: Heather Canott of Pleasantview

April 8, 2021

Heather Canott sees the residents she cares for as family. As a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and activity assistant at Pleasantview in Kalona, Heather enjoys being a part of her team of coworkers and working together to make their residents happy.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I began my career in long-term care as a CNA at Parkview in Wellman. I worked at Parkview for 4.5 years until a friend convinced me to apply at Pleasantview.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
The residents! I love to make them happy in my role in the activity department and as a CNA. I love my coworkers too!  Pleasantview is a good place to work, and I feel that the staff is all in it together.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
If you have a heart for helping others, this is the place to be – residents need you. It feels really good to help them. They also pour into you. Residents appreciate what you do for them. They become like family.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
To be patient, how to put yourself in others’ shoes, as well as empathy.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not at Pleasantview, I like to spend time with my husband, cook, read, be with friends, watch TV and listen to music.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.” – Napoleon Hill

You can always do the best you can, no matter what it is you are doing. It’s often the small things that make the most difference in someone’s day. I also enjoy the quote, ”Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much!” by Oscar Wilde.
