Jamie Raymond was looking for a steady position in a reliable line of work when she discovered a fulfilling career in long-term care. In her current role in environmental services and as a dietary aide at Anamosa Care Center in Anamosa, Iowa, she has come to consider the residents family and values the impact her co-workers have had on her.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I had just lost my job of two years, due to the store closing. I wanted to find something in town that was going to stay open. I wanted something long-term.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy the residents the most. They become family.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
When encouraging others to consider a career in long-term care, I would tell them there are a variety of roles other than being a nurse or CNA. For example, environmental and dietary services are important and fulfilling roles in long-term care.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have become more talkative. When I started, I just did my work. However, my co-workers helped me become more outgoing.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I like to read.
