After working at a hospital, Jean Petitti pursued a career in home health care so she could work with more patients one-on-one. As a home health care administrator for Good Samaritan Society Home Health Care in Spirit Lake, Jean enjoys working as a team to provide support and solutions to patients.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I have worked in home health care for over 11 years. Prior to home care, I worked at a small rural hospital and was interested in working on more one-on-one situations.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy developing relationships with our clients and their families. I also like the close teamwork that develops between coworkers across many disciplines. The flexibility and autonomy that home health care offers is professionally rewarding.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Home health care offers you a chance to really make a difference in a client’s long-term recovery and success at home. In home care, the whole team has the opportunity to provide education and support to an individual to help that person reach their goals.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
I have learned that everyone has a life story to share with you. I have met so many interesting people in my community.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, gardening and kayaking.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou
