Jerry Jensen has been a home health aide at Family Care Solutions in Davenport for two years but was introduced to long-term care long ago. For the past 39 years, he has cared for a disabled patient in his home and finds it so rewarding to care for others and help them grow.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My long-term care profession began informally when I committed to caring for a severe/profoundly disabled child in my home due to their parent’s request as they worked out of the country. Thirty-nine years later and the individual still lives in my home! I have been involved with FCS for the last two years as a home health aide.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite parts about working in long-term care are the relationships and bonds formed with individuals. This includes positive responses – both verbally and non-verbally – from an individual just when I enter the room. I love being an advocate for these incredible individuals.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
If you have patience and can go with the flow and would like to see someone grow due to you and your commitment – then working in long-term care is for you! In my opinion, the personal satisfaction is just as great. It is easy to come to work when you love your job.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
I have learned patience and how to look for a positive in what could be a negative situation.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy meeting and eating out with friends, working in and around the house (remodeling, gardening, etc.) and watching TV channels like HGTV and Food Network.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“We cannot adjust the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” Keeping this quote in mind makes me stop, think and find the solutions to anything that may come my way. No need to overreact – just refocus.
