Jessica Wagner began her career in long-term care when her grandmother moved to an assisted living facility. As a resident assistant at Windsor Manor Assisted Living in Algona, her favorite part of her job is building relationships with residents and their families.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My grandparents were in the nursing home when my grandpa passed away. My grandma needed help but didn’t require a nursing home, so she asked me to apply and work where she was moving. I’ve been here ever since.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
The best part of working in long-term care is the relationships I’ve made with residents and their families over the years. They become your family also.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Working in long-term care is so rewarding! When the residents see you and light up, or when they tell you that they know they can trust you and come to you with anything – it’s the best.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I’ve learned how to evaluate each situation differently and act accordingly. I’ve also learned to not second guess myself so much and be more confident.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with family, friends and my two cats. If I’m not at home, I’m camping with friends. I also do a lot of karaoke.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Leave a little sparkle wherever you go.” I love this quote because you never know when someone might need that kindness, smile or laughter. I try to live by this even on my bad days when I could use some sparkle.
