Joe Bartolo began his career in health care in high school and holds a registered nursing (RN) degree and bachelor’s degree in health care administration from Iowa Lakes Community College and Capella University. He currently serves as the administrator of Good Samaritan Society in Algona and enjoys creating a home for their residents. Joe is a former IHCA Foundation Scholarship recipient, and we thank him for his involvement with the scholarship program and commitment to improving Iowa’s long-term care workforce.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in high school and continued while I went to college.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy having the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those we serve and building relationships with the residents, their families and staff.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
The rewards for the work we do are unbelievable. We have the privilege to celebrate successful rehab stints that allow residents to return to their highest level of function and their home. We get to make our facility our residents’ home and make them feel loved, valued and at peace. We also have an opportunity to make a positive impact and comfort those we serve in the last days, weeks and months of their lives.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I’ve learned that every person has a unique story and to take the time to get to know each resident and staff member. Those bonds form long-lasting relationships.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my wife Lisa and our five kids – Ava, Emmi, Addie, Tate and Ellie. I love coaching girls basketball at Bishop Garrigan, coaching and attending my kids’ events, hunting and fishing.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.” I believe that God has a plan for all of us and He will never put us in situations that we cannot handle, and He will always be with us through our joys and our struggles. This past year, this quote has really helped build my strength and hope amongst the pandemic.
