Member Spotlight: Kaylynn Kruckenburg of Shady Oaks Care Center

June 24, 2019

Kaylynn Kruckenburg entered the long-term care profession by taking CNA classes in high school and began at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City in October 2017. She graduated from South Central Calhoun High School this spring and will be pursing her nursing degree at Des Moines Area Community College. She loves interacting with the residents and learning about their life experiences, as well as spending time with her coworkers.

“Kaylynn is intelligent, determined and has one of the biggest hearts we have ever known,” said Sara Casey, people development coordinator at Shady Oaks.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started in the long-term care profession by taking CNA classes while in high school. This is the first step to my career in nursing.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I love learning so much from the people I interact with. Everyday I learn something so interesting about someone’s life and what they went through. It makes me grateful for mine.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I would tell others that this career is very rewarding because of the people I work with. My coworkers and residents make my job very pleasurable. There is never a day without laughter.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned to not judge a book by its cover. No matter what happens in life, your life might differ from others, and that is why every day you have to forgive and love more.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy walking my dog, hiking, playing softball and kayaking.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“The closest thing to being cared for is to care for someone else.”  – Carson McCullers, The Square Root of Wonderful

This is my favorite quote because I have found my life passion in caring for others, and they help me as much as I help them.
