Member Spotlight: Lisa Baker of Longhouse-Northshire Care Center

April 23, 2020

Due to COVID-19, dietary departments at long-term care facilities have had to modify processes, yet have continued to go above and beyond for the people they serve. Lisa Baker works in the dietary department at Longhouse-Northshire Care Center and we are proud to feature her as this week’s Member Spotlight. The residents have become like family to Lisa and she enjoys the opportunity to make an impact on their lives.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My mother worked in dietary for years and got me a job when I was in high school.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I love helping the residents, they are like family to me. I enjoy listening to all of their stories from their youth. It is so fascinating to me.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
This job requires a lot of patience and people skills. Every resident and their families have different needs. I would also say that you get attached to several residents that you see on a daily basis, so it can be hard when they pass away or are well enough to return to their home.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned that a simple smile and short conversation can mean the world to a person when they are ill or just getting used to new surroundings.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love to visit new places on vacation. I like to read and I do enjoy being outdoors when it is not cold.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Be kind to one another.”

I found this quote to be true in life and in long-term care. With the years I have worked in long-term care, I found that a kind smile or conversation can make a resident’s day. If you go in with a bad mood, it changes the resident’s mood.
