Member Spotlight: Lori Bellinger of Ravenwood Specialty Care

December 23, 2019

Lori Bellinger was introduced to a career in long-term care when she started out as a CNA. As the administrator at Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo, she believes the best parts of her job are the residents and her team. Thank you for all you do, Lori!

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started out my health care career as a CNA. As I was in clinical training, I knew I wanted to work with the aging population.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
The best part of working in long-term care is the residents. Visiting with them, hearing their stories and supporting them in any way I can. Also, we have a great caring team at Ravenwood. They are rock stars!

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
If you are looking for a rewarding job, this is it. It can be tough at times, like when you lose a resident you were very close to, but the residents count on us every day – 24 hours a day. Some don’t have families, and some do. You become their family.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Breathe! Life throws you challenges. Get yourself up and brush it off.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love spending time with my family, camping and gardening.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” – Mark Twain.
