Member Spotlight: Lucy Hand of Accura Healthcare of Spirit Lake

March 12, 2020

When Lucy began working in long-term care, she wanted to work in housekeeping or the kitchen. However, after accepting a CNA position, she fell in love with the job. Even after celebrating 25 years of service at Accura Healthcare of Spirit Lake, Lucy still learns life lessons every day from the residents she serves.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I was looking for a job and I wanted a job in housekeeping or the kitchen, but they needed CNAs. So I accepted the CNA position and fell in love with the job.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
The residents – every day I like learning about their lives. I’m always learning new lessons in life even after all the years of being a CNA.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I have always felt that I have received so much from the love of the residents and families. I can always go home each day knowing I made a difference to someone.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Slow down and really listen to people.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with family, reading and watching the deer and birds in my yard.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“It is what it is.” Because some things you can’t change, so I just work on things I can.
