Marc Blong is the emergency preparedness coordinator and works in the maintenance department at IOOF Home and Community Therapy Center in Mason City. In this role, Marc enjoys serving the residents and impacting their lives. Additionally, Marc was a 2020 IHCA Foundation scholarship recipient. Thank you, Marc, for all you do to provide top-notch care for the residents in your facility.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I moved to a new city and found a job as an appointment/transportation coordinator at a nursing home. I had never considered working with this population, but it seemed very fitting and I was eager to give it a shot.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I love getting to know the residents and their families. It warms my heart to serve others, and sharing laughs and stories with them is something I cherish.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It’s a wonderful opportunity to serve others and impact lives. Along the way, you will learn that those you serve actually impact your life and teach you many lessons. You will also have the opportunity to be surrounded by caring individuals you’ll admire.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I’ve learned that I am fortunate and need to appreciate my health. I’ve also learned that every interaction I have with a person is an opportunity to learn. More than anything, it has been very humbling.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy coaching high school girls rugby, playing rugby, running, hiking, kayking, traveling and spending time with my dog.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“We are not on earth to see how important we can become, but to see how much difference we can make in the lives of others.” – Gordon Hinckley. I feel as though enriching others’ lives is the greatest reward our efforts can provide us.
