April 9, 2020

Marcele Chaves, a CMA/CNA at Bickford Assisted Living of Cedar Falls, moved to the U.S. from Brazil at age 23 and is currently studying to become an RN. She appreciates the home-like environment of Bickford, loves getting to know residents and cannot imagine herself doing anything else other than being a nurse. Thank you for all you do, Marcele!

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
At the age of 23 I started nursing school to become a BSN in Brazil. I dropped out and moved to the U.S. and started working in hospitality when I first moved here. I was making good money and never went back to school, and then later decided it was time for me to go back to school. I am currently working on becoming an RN in Iowa. I work at Bickford because of my connection. I feel responsible for the care and love they get at Bickford. Bickford is different than anywhere I have ever worked because of the home-like environment. I am becoming a nurse because I can’t see myself doing anything else.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I love working in long-term care because you get to know each resident as a person. I try to be a positive moment in their daily routine.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I would encourage others to consider a career in long-term care because of the purpose and feeling of fulfillment. There is no other job that would give this great of purpose.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Every day is a new day. Think positive, be respectful and be more compassionate.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy playing with my dog, working out, listening to music and enjoying the outdoors.

What is your favorite quote and why?
Corinthians 4:16-18 – Therefore we do not lose heart.

I like that quote because it reminds me to keep going, dig deep into my heart, have faith and believe.
