Member Spotlight: Maria Zeron of Bickford of Iowa City

April 2, 2020

As an LPN at Bickford of Iowa City, Maria Zeron believes that being a nurse is her calling and that working in long-term care is the most satisfying profession. In caring for the elderly, she has found a second family in her coworkers and residents. IHCA thanks Maria, and all long-term care employees for everything they do – especially in these crucial times.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started as a caregiver and found out that I enjoyed taking care of elderly people. I became a CNA and then an LPN to continue to help give joy and care to my residents.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy interacting with residents, hearing stories about their lives and learning lessons from their experiences.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
A career in long-term care is very rewarding. I have found my second family here in my coworkers and residents.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Be very patient, enjoy life and do the best you can in everything you do.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love to read and spend time with my children and husband.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Your goal in life is to find the people who need you most, to find out the business that needs you most, and to find the project and art that needs you most. There is something out there for you.” I found my goal, business, project and art in the most satisfying job and profession that I love – as a nurse.
