Mary Soukup spent a lot of time with her grandparents growing up and has a passion for caring for the elderly. As a rehab aide and CNA at PARC Hall at Palo Alto County Health System, she enjoys learning from those she cares for and appreciates the variety of people she gets to meet through her role.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My first job in long-term care was in Yankton, South Dakota.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy taking care of the elderly – it is rewarding. They are very appreciative and have a lot to offer. Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. I get to meet a lot of different people.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
If you are a people person and enjoy caring for others, this career is worth looking into.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
I have learned to appreciate life even more, as well as the lives of others.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with family, reading spiritual material, playing cards, cooking and baking, as well as listening to music.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible, and suddenly you’re doing the impossible.” It is a reminder we are not alone. God is with us.
