Michelle Hamilton entered the long-term care profession after her sister encouraged her to join the activities department due to Michelle’s outgoing personality. As the activity director at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, Michelle enjoys making the residents smile. She also serves on IHCA’s Convention and Education Committee and the Iowa Council of Activity Professionals (ICAP). Congratulations to Michelle as she celebrates her nine-year anniversary at Sunny View this month!
How did you become interested in the long-term care profession?
My sister, Jill East, was an administrative assistant at Sunny View Care Center and referred me to the activities department, saying, “because you love to talk.”
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy the residents and families.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I encourage others to work in long-term care, as you get to help residents and make them smile, hold their hands and learn their life stories.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help outside of work?
I’ve learned to have fun, be flexible and try to make a difference to those around me.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, eating chips and salsa and sleeping.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
