Member Spotlight: Michon Scott of West Ridge Care Center

August 18, 2022

Michon Scott, a recent recipient of the IHCA Foundation’s 2022 John R. and Kimberly D. Grubb Registered Nurse (RN) Scholarship, has been working in long-term care for many years. From a candy striper to licensed practical nurse (LPN), Michon takes pride in helping others through providing the highest quality of care to residents.

How did you become interested in the long-term care profession?
I started at a young age. I worked as a candy striper at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids before it became UnityPoint.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy being around the elders. There is something special about the geriatric population that I don’t think everyone remembers. They are our source of the best information personally, mentally and emotionally.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I would tell others about the joy you gain from being around and speaking with the elders.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help outside of work?
Do not take life for granted, and enjoy every day you have to its fullest.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy reading and being with my family.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Live everyday like it is your last because life is short, and tomorrow is not promised.”
