Mindy Strause began her career in long-term care at age 17 as an aide helper. As the life enrichment coordinator at Bickford Senior Living of Muscatine, she finds it rewarding to help others in need.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My first job in high school when I was 17 was at a local nursing home as an aide helper.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy being able to help others in need. I am a natural caretaker at heart.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It is very rewarding, and I love connecting with seniors both one-to-one and in group activities.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned patience, compassion and taking the time to listen.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy walking, running and yard work, as well as diamond art projects and spending time with family and friends.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Always be the better person” and “show kindness every day.”
