Member Spotlight: Nya Lo of St. Luke Lutheran Home

May 14, 2020

Nya Lo began her career in long-term care when she was in high school. As a dietary aide at St. Luke Home and Services, Nya enjoys building relationships with the residents and her coworkers. During this pandemic, she is grateful for the spirit of teamwork that exists among the staff.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I was seeking a part-time job while in high school, and my friend referred me to the dietary aide position at St. Luke Lutheran Home.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Interacting with the residents is my favorite thing I enjoy while working in a nursing home. For example, listening to many of their stories, helping them in any way I can and seeing a smile run across their face with just a simple wave or “hello.” Not only do we strive to make them smile, they love to see that from us as well. I have gone to work a couple of times stressed or upset, but have never left work without a smile on my face thanks to them.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Not only do you build relationships with the residents, you also become close with your coworkers. We are all one big family working together to meet the goal of giving the residents the best care they deserve. Though times can be serious, we also like to have a little fun while working.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Most of the lessons I have learned from working in long-term care have come from my coworkers or the residents. The quote, “Teamwork makes the dream work,” really comes into play during this COVID-19 pandemic. Working together and being a team player, not only within each department but throughout the whole facility, makes this big change bearable. I realized from being around the residents to live in the moment because life is so short.

When you are not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy a variety of different activities such as walking, fishing, biking, traveling, playing tennis, watching Netflix, listening to music and most importantly, spending quality time with my family and friends.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Every situation in life is temporary. So when life is good, make sure you enjoy and receive it fully. And when life is not so good, remember that it will not last forever and better days are on the way.”

It is important to not be sad or dwell on bad days. We should be proud and thankful to live another day. I have learned to cherish every moment and to enjoy the little things in life because tomorrow is never promised.
