Member Spotlight: Renee Greve of Garden View Assisted Living

March 25, 2021

Renee Greve entered the long-term care profession right out of high school. As a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at Garden View Assisted Living in Carroll, Renee enjoys assisting tenants with daily tasks and learning from those she cares for.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I needed a job right out of high school and was planning on nursing school. A nursing home close to my town had openings and I thought it would be a good experience.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
It may not have been why I started, but the best part of working in long-term care now is the simple appreciation I get from my tenants. Just by bringing in books and extra newspapers, shuttling things between tenants, dialing a phone and providing five minutes of conversation with a hug means so much to them. We take a lot of things for granted and when we help this population with those same things, the smiles and thank you’s make it worthwhile. They have so much to share with us when we take the time.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Like the military, it’s the toughest job you’ll ever love. You are sometimes the only person who understands and loves them. Their smiles make you forget how hard the job can be and they are so grateful for all you do.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
These people are like snowflakes – they’re all unique. They have all sorts of knowledge and advice for you.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy reading books, listening to country music and babying our lab, Rudy.
