In Rhonda Connop’s 43 years of experience in long-term care, she is constantly learning something new and every day is different. As a certified activity director at Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehab Center, she feels blessed to be able to make a difference in the lives of residents.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started as a dietary aide while still in high school. A friend of my mom encouraged me to apply. I loved it – and have stuck around for 43 years.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy the variety and the different elders to learn from. I’m always learning something new, and every day is different. In my job, I get to try all sorts of creative things.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Whether you see long-term care as your career path or a stepping stone along the way, you can learn so many valuable skills and life lessons. Working with our elders is a blessing, and it is a wonderful feeling to know you are needed, valued and have made a difference.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned patience, that there are two sides to every story and not to judge too quickly. I’ve also learned that change isn’t easy, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Also, everyone has a story and you should listen more than you talk.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy quilting, crafting, baking, reading, playing with my pets, doing puzzles, playing games and spending time with my family and friends.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone. For this sad old earth must borrow its mirth but has trouble enough of its own.” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox
