Rhonda Koenig was looking for a new career when she decided to enter the long-term care profession. As a laundry aide at Wellington Place in Decorah, she enjoys the variety of her role and finds it rewarding to create a comfortable home for residents.
How did you become interested in the long-term care profession?
I needed a job and didn’t want to go back to factory work. I always wanted to work in laundry.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy visiting with the residents and seeing smiles on their faces.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It’s fun. You never know from day to day what’s going to go on or what residents have on their mind. It is rewarding making the residents feel at home and loved.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help outside of work?
Some lessons I have learned are how to associate with the elderly and to be patient and kind.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy baking and spending time with my grandchildren and husband. I also enjoy vegetable gardening and canning.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Eat your dessert first because life is uncertain.”
