Stefanie Arbogast began her career in long-term care as a junior in high school. She has worked in the kitchen, as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and is currently a medical clerk at Pleasantview Home in Kalona. She enjoys taking the time to get to know the residents and their families and finds it rewarding to make a difference in the lives she cares for.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I got started in long-term care as a junior in high school when I took a Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) class. As a senior, I was able to take the emergency medical technicians (EMT) class as well. The class was held in a nursing home Monday through Friday, so we became close with the residents. I then started working in the kitchen of a local nursing home, and after I finished the HOSA class, I became a CNA.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Most of all, I enjoy the relationships I make with the residents and family. I started out working second shift in high school. I loved that, as it was slower paced and gave me more time to build relationships with residents and their families. When working on the floor, I got to know them personally and quickly learned things they like and dislike. It is always interesting learning the things residents have done in their lives.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It is a rewarding job. It is a great feeling at the end of the day knowing that you have been there for the residents – not just physically, but emotionally as well. You make a difference in their lives, sometimes by just being there and listening to their needs.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned patience, to not be rushed and taking the time to slow down and appreciate the little things.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my family and being outdoors.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Don’t cry because it is over. Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss
