Member Spotlight: Steve Fister and Brianne Fister

October 1, 2020

In honor of this week’s launch of IHCA’s 2020 Digital Convention, this week’s Member Spotlight features a father-daughter team that plays an essential role in IHCA’s annual convention. Steve Fister, administrator of Exira Care Center, and Brianne Fister, the director of the Gardens Assisted Living in Jefferson, serve as co-chairs for IHCA’s Convention and Education Committee. Steve has been involved with IHCA education events for 35 years and Brianne has been involved for over three years. IHCA is grateful for the support, enthusiasm, entertainment….and costumes that they have provided for IHCA events through the years. Seeing their faces during the general sessions is truly a highlight of every convention. Thank you for all you do, not only for the residents and tenants you serve, but for the association as well.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
Steve: My mom arranged an interview for an office manager position at our hometown nursing home. I interviewed one day and started the next. I was there for three years until I started health care administration classes.

Brianne: I was working in a residential facility, and my dad signed me up to take the assisted living managers class. Then I got a position as an assisted living director.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Steve: I enjoy the residents, who are so full of stories and memories.

Brianne: I have been visiting nursing homes since I was a baby when my Dad would take me to work with him. I truly love being around the elderly.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Steve: Working in long-term care is very fulfilling. You know you are caring for others.

Brianne: Although there can be challenges, it is like taking care of a big family.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
Steve: I have learned that life is way too short and to not put off doing things in life. We see too many who have waited until they retire to enjoy life.

Brianne: I have learned that family involvement is very important and it’s all about patience.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Steve: I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.

Brianne: I enjoy spending time with family…and did I mention wine?
