Member Spotlight: Sylvia Bandow of Manilla Manor

June 17, 2019

A job at a nursing facility was one of the few employment opportunities available in Sylvia Bandow’s hometown, so she gave it a shot. She quickly developed a love for serving the elderly and hearing their stories. Almost four decades later, Sylvia serves as the administrator of Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
There was this nursing home in my small hometown. It was one of the few employment opportunities available. That was 1981 and I fell in love with serving the older population and have been in long-term care ever since.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite parts of working in long-term care are the residents and their life stories. It feels so good when I can do something so simple and it makes them smile and puts a bright spot in their day.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Caring for the elderly is the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. Seeing the residents smile and getting all their hugs feels great.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I’ve had to learn effective listening skills and problem-solving skills.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
My greatest joy is playing with my granddaughter.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Squirrel” – when thoughts just pop into my mind.
