How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started working in a nursing home in 1984 as a CNA. I worked as an aide in a hospital for three years and have worked in assisted living since 2004.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part of working in long-term care is taking care of the people and meeting families. We are like family here. I like hearing about the residents’ histories and stories.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It’s a very rewarding experience.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I understand how families go through emotional struggles when their loves ones decline and need more help.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my grandkids and family, as well as taking care of all of my animals.
What is your favorite quote and why?
Always take time to stop and smell the flowers. Everyone is so busy anymore, people need to stop and enjoy the beauty of life.
