Member Spotlight: Tim Christy of Longhouse-Northshire

October 7, 2021

While in college, Tim Christy took an interest in the long-term care profession and believed it would be a way to make a positive impact in the world. He recently retired as the administrator of Longhouse-Northshire, and we thank him for his active involvement on the IHCA board and PR committee. Thank you, Tim, for all you’ve done for long-term care and best wishes in your retirement!

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
In college I determined that working in long-term care would be a positive profession. I started in a nursing home as the social worker and activity coordinator. From there, I had the good fortune of learning from many professionals along the way.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
You can always find a place where people need your assistance to improve their condition or life in some manner. There are always opportunities to meet new people and use the skills you have learned over the years. It is hard work that is very rewarding and a lot of fun at the same time.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
You will develop working relationships and friends for a lifetime with a huge variety of persons. You will have the great satisfaction of knowing you have given your professional best for residents, families and employees to feel secure, healed, comforted and respected, as though part of a real family. We are placed on earth to assist those around us.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Be patient because everyone is unique and special. We need to accurately and completely understand each scenario in order to deliver the best action and answers for optimal results. You can learn a lot from someone older who has experienced more of what life offers.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I like discussing and enjoying projects and events with family. I also enjoy reading, following politics, construction projects, working with old cars and trucks, listening to and learning music, helping grandkids with sports and working to be a better person.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24

We know life is short and often can be a struggle, so look at making the most of every day by being thankful for all of the blessings around us, no matter what the circumstances. We can be a positive influence to others with the right attitude and perspective.
