CPR & DNR Guidance & Tools

CPR should always be initiated unless: a valid DNR order is in place; there are obvious signs of clinical death which include rigor mortis, dependent lividity, decapitation, transection, or decomposition; or in cases where initiating CPR could cause injury or peril to the rescuer. Providers are at risk for severe regulatory sanctions if residents who have chosen CPR, are not promptly provided with resuscitation efforts unless facilities clearly document signs of clinical death as outlined in the CMS guidance.
