A.L. Regulatory Class – April 2024

Program Description

The purpose of this class is to provide nurses with the Iowa assisted living laws, rules, and regulations.  The focus of the education will be a review of the assisted living regulations and survey process, the role of the nurse and healthcare assistant in assisted living settings and medication management.  The class will prepare nurses to develop services and procedures that reflect assisted living values and comply with Iowa certification rules. Discussion of emerging issues will assure that your services comply with regulatory intent.

Whether you are new to health care, new to the assisted living continuum, or need an assisted living regulation update, this course will give you the information needed to understand the assisted living regulations and the survey processes.

This class meets Iowa Assisted Living Regulation: 481-69.29(6): All Iowa Assisted Living facilities must have a minimum of one delegating nurse, complete an assisted living nursing class whose curriculum includes at least six hours of training specifically related to Iowa rules and laws on assisted living.

Speaker Bios

Catie Campbell has been with the Department of Inspections and Appeals since 2009.  Catie began her employment with the Department as a surveyor for the Special Services Bureau.  In 2014 Catie moved to the Program Coordinator position for Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/ID) and assumed the role of Program Coordinator for Adult Services Bureau in July 2016, as well.  Catie has served as the Bureau Chief of the Adult/Special Services since December 2021.

Stacy Hejda is Owner/Vice President of Regulatory Compliance with Assisted Living Partners.  She has over 15 years of experience working with assisted living programs in Iowa.  Stacy currently serves as the Past President to the ICAL Board of Directors and is a member of the ICAL Payment for Services Committee and is Chairperson of the ICAL Quality Committee.  She represented Iowa as a NCAL 2013-2014 Future Leaders of America.  She received her Assisted Living Management certification in 2002.

Brenda Irlbeck is the Vice President, Quality & Clinical Services for the Iowa Health Care Association, the Iowa Center for Assisted Living, and the Iowa Center for Home Care.   Brenda works closely with the IHCA and ICAL Quality Improvement Committees and the IHCA Medicare Committee.  She is knowledgeable regarding issues related to quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and clinical practice in post-acute care settings.  Brenda is a registered nurse, certified assisted living manager, and a former director of nursing.

Julie Johnson received her RN at Des Moines Area Community College.  Julie has been a Nurse Consultant with Assisted Living Partners since June 2019.  In her capacity she completes regulatory compliance reviews providing written reports with recommendations on improving assessments and tenant charts.  Julie also goes to Assisted Living communities as an RN completing assessments, updating service plans, and implementing new systems.  Julie has worked in long-term care for many years serving as a Director of Nursing and Director of Assisted Living.  She is currently working on her BSN in Nursing through Grand Canyon University.
