Program Description

Crafting Compassionate Care: Designing Service Plans for Assisted Living Communities
Speaker: Amy Skelton, A.L. Nurse Consultant, Healthcare of Iowa

DIA has put more emphasis on reviewing Individual Service Plans during recent surveys which has increased the number of facilities being cited for out-of-date or improperly documented plans. The Service Plan is the road map to caring for the tenant in Assisted Living. In this session we will explore how to generate and gather the information as well as what information to include on the Service Plan. In addition, we will discuss some ideas on how to make it easier for the staff to read and use the Service Plan to increase tenant and staff satisfaction.

Ensuring Excellence: Strategies for Quality Outcomes in Assisted Living
Speaker, Brenda Irlbeck, V.P. of Quality Improvement & Regulatory Compliance, Iowa Health Care Association

This session will provide innovative guidance on implementing best practices interventions to improve and manage the health of tenants which in turn will provide quality outcomes. Effective strategies that ensure the well-being, safety, and satisfaction of residents while adhering to regulatory standards will be discussed.

Antipsychotic Drug Reduction and High-Risk Drugs in A.L.
Speaker: Jake Hanken, Consultant Pharmacist, Synchrony Pharmacy

Antipsychotic Drug Reduction (ADR) has become a crucial focus in healthcare due to concerns about over prescribing, particularly among elderly patients. This session will delve into the rationale behind ADR initiatives, the potential risks associated with prolonged antipsychotic use in the elderly, and strategies for safely tapering or discontinuing these medications when appropriate. The second part of the session will focus on high-risk drugs commonly used in assisted living settings. Participants will gain an understanding of medications with a high potential for adverse effects, drug interactions, and misuse, particularly among older adults.

Assisted Living Legal Compliance Essentials
Speaker: Ken Watkins, Attorney, Ken Watkins Law Firm

Unfortunately, there are very serious incidents and accidents that will occur in your community no matter the precautions you take to avoid them. It could be as simple as a tenant taking a fall, all the way to an attack on a tenant by a staff member or another resident. Discussion in this session will focus on the regulatory requirements for reporting an incident; identify which incidents are reportable; and will review what to include and not include in an incident report.
