Topic Descriptions

Antipsychotic Reduction Strategies in Long-Term Care
Instructor: Dr. David Gifford
  This session will delve into evidence-based approaches and best practices for reducing the use of antipsychotic medications among elderly individuals, particularly those living with dementia or other cognitive impairments. Discussion will focus on the assessment of patients with behavioral and psychiatric signs of dementia, and the best practices for non-pharmacological interventions and dose reduction or discontinuation of antipsychotics.

Elevating Your 5-Star Rating
Instructor: Dr. David Gifford
  Is your facility an “excellent performer”, “very good” or moving towards “Fair performance” based on the CMS 5 Star scoring system? This session will go beyond the 5 Star manual criteria and definitions to share solutions, approaches, and resources for operators to maintain and improve ratings. No matter your status it is imperative that operators maintain awareness of changes and opportunities for the highest rating.

Unlock the Path to Effective Advanced Care Planning
Instructor: Dr. David Gifford
  This session will examine the significance of advance care planning, exploring its various components and practical strategies. From discussing the importance of early discussions about healthcare preferences to understanding legal frameworks such as advance directives and living wills, attendees will gain insights into fostering meaningful conversations around end-of-life care.

The Seven Pillars of Excellence
Instructor: Cathy Bergland
  To truly embed “quality” into the care and services we provide to residents, patients, guests, and clients, we need to take a systems perspective, have clearly defined ways of doing work, evaluate the effectiveness of the work we are doing, and track results.  In this session, we will walk through the seven pillars of excellence that help create a systems perspective:  Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer Orientation, Data and Information, Workforce, Operations, and Results.  While it is always important to maintain regulatory compliance, high-performing organizations take this more holistic view of what it means to be a place where employees want to serve and deliver great care and services to those we serve. 

Making QAPI Actionable to Advance Quality
Instructors: Lisa Bridwell and Gina Anderson
  This informational session will delve into the core principles of QAPI and its transformative potential in nursing home settings. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of QAPI methodology, learning how to identify areas for improvement, implement evidence-based interventions, and monitor progress systematically.

Speaker Bios

Gina Anderson, RN, BSN is a Senior Quality Improvement Facilitator at Telligen. Gina has worked in nursing homes in a variety of roles for over 23 years with roles as Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, and as a Nurse Consultant. In her current role, Gina supports nursing homes across Iowa with quality improvement technical assistance, clinical and quality improvement education and healthcare resources.

Cathy Bergland has served at Presbyterian Homes & Services (based in Minnesota) since 1986 in various roles, most recently in Leadership Development. She is also with CB Leadership Group, a consulting and training organization focusing on leadership development, intercultural competence, and performance excellence. Cathy received her undergraduate degree in Music Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, her MBA from the University of St. Thomas, and is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator.

Lisa Bridwell, Quality Improvement Manager Telligen. Lisa has over 30 years’ experience in long term care, with a passion for supporting and coaching nursing home staff on healthcare improvement opportunities to improve the lives of the residents they serve. Lisa advocates for the patient perspective while supporting and partnering with clinicians, provider settings and other stakeholder organizations. Her expertise in quality improvement covers several areas, including clinical, operational, and analytical.

David Gifford, MD, MPH, is a geriatrician who currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer at AHCA/NCAL. He helped create the Quality department, which assists providers in their quality improvement efforts and works with Administration officials on regulations and policies impacting the profession. Dr. Gifford is also the Director of the Center for Health Policy & Evaluation in Long Term Care, a collaborative research effort. Dr. Gifford holds a faculty appointment at Brown University Medical School and School of Public Health. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed his geriatric fellowship at UCLA.
