Human Resources Essentials and Successful Hiring Practices

Financial and Business Management in LTC
Instructor: Jeff Steggerda

How to Engage Your Medical Director into Your Quality Improvement Program

Mitigating Risk in Long-Term Care

  This session focuses on identifying and addressing potential risks in long-term care settings. Participants will learn strategies to prevent incidents, reduce liability, and enhance safety protocols for both residents and staff. Key topics include risk assessments, infection control, regulatory compliance, staff training, and creating a culture of safety.

Life Safety – Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Instructor: Ryan Matheney
  This session will cover fire safety regulations, conducting fire drills, maintaining fire safety equipment, and preparing for various emergency situations. Discussion will focus on best practices for fire prevention, evacuation procedures, and emergency response plans to ensure the safety of residents and staff.

Speaker Bios

Rebecca (Becki) Brommel is an attorney at Dorsey & Whitney LLP in Des Moines, IA, Becki helps people with Health Care issues and Health Care legal needs, she also assists clients with Administrative Law and Business Litigation issues. Becki attended Drake University Law School and began practicing law in 2001.  She was selected to Super Lawyers for 2018 – 2022. Super Lawyers is an exclusive list of top-rated attorneys in specific practice areas who were chosen after thorough evaluation of numerous criteria.

Brenda Irlbeck is the Vice President, Quality Improvement & Regulatory Affairs for the Iowa Health Care Association, the Iowa Center for Assisted Living, and the Iowa Center for Home Care.   Brenda works closely with the IHCA and ICAL Quality Improvement Committees and the IHCA Medicare Committee.  She is knowledgeable regarding issues related to quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and clinical practice in post-acute care settings.  Brenda is a registered nurse, certified assisted living manager, and a former director of nursing.

Tasha Janssen is a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and the Director of Clinical Operations at Curana Health. Her education includes graduating from Ellsworth Community College with her associate degree in nursing and continuing to get her master’s from Graceland University. Tasha’s career as a nurse practitioner has included hospice and post-acute care work. Tasha is a member of the Iowa Nurse Practitioner Society and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Pastor Ricky A. Rohrig Sr. is a licensed nursing home administrator.  He has worked in long-term care for over 10 years in various roles as a Chaplain, staff development coordinator, QAPI Coordinator, and has also been a consultant in leadership development, and change management.  Pastor Ricky has several years of experience in the restaurant industry as a manager in fast food, quick service, and full-service dining. Pastor Ricky is a certified Serv-Safe instructor and proctor since 2018.

Ryan Matheney is the Owner and Administrator of a long-term care facility, with extensive expertise in Life Safety and Emergency Preparedness. With years of experience in the healthcare industry, Ryan has developed a deep understanding of regulatory compliance, safety standards, and the critical importance of disaster preparedness. He is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and staff, leveraging his knowledge to implement robust safety protocols and emergency response plans.

Jeff Steggerda is a Reimbursement Consultant and President of Brighton Consulting Group.  Jeff has worked in the long term care profession since 1986.  He began working with IHCA in 1993 as a Reimbursement Consultant.  His roles for IHCA have included creating and maintaining several informational databases to support the quality, finance, and data objectives of the association.  Jeff is a CPA, receiving a BBA degree.  His career path includes public accounting and positions as Director of Accounting with regional long term care companies.

Jo Ellen Whitney is a senior shareholder of Denton’s Davis Brown Law Firm, having obtained her degrees (B.A., magna cum laude, and J.D.) from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.  Jo practices primarily in the areas of labor and employment law, healthcare law, privacy, and fair housing.  In the area of labor and employment, Jo assists businesses with policy and contract development, human resources planning, disciplinary and termination issues as well as regulatory compliance and litigation matters.
