Director of Nursing (DON)
The Director of Nursing (DON) provides direction to the nursing staff, coordinates health services, and oversees resident care as well as administrative responsibilities. They develop and maintain nursing service objectives and standards of nursing practice, develops nursing service policies and contributes to developing of job descriptions for nursing personnel. The Director of Nursing is expected to work with other department directors and staff to best serves the residents, working as a team to interpret and improve processes, policies and procedures to meet their needs.
The DON organizes, develops, and provides supervision and administration of quality resident nursing care for the facility by the nursing staff. They are responsible to direct and supervise the staff of the Nursing Department. The DON should be an empathetic, caring person, and enjoy working with all people. They must have the ability to make difficult decisions, possess strong leadership qualities, be a good judge of character, and develop conflict resolution skills. Establishes personnel qualification requirements, drafts procedure manuals, initiates in-service programs, and performs other personnel management tasks.
The DON must recognize the need to communicate with the interdisciplinary team for help and to carry out quality resident care, reports to the Administrator, attends Director Meetings, and communicates with the medical staff, department Directors, nursing personnel, residents, family members, and visitors. Provide good public relations with the physicians and other providers. Initiate and conduct all QAPI meetings, minutes, and appropriate documentation.
The DON will evaluate, supervise and direct nursing staff in providing a physical, social, and psychological environment to maintain the highest level of independent function and well-being for all the residents and facility.
