Life Safety Bootcamp
Program Description
This training program will deliver the latest guidance on CMS expectations and requirements for life safety, emergency preparedness and water management. Participants will gain practical knowledge and actionable strategies to strengthen compliance, improve emergency readiness and promote a safe environment for residents, staff and communities. Attendees will build their expertise, exchange best practices and strengthen their facility’s commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
A specific area of concern for providers should be recent Legionella outbreaks across the nation. These outbreaks underscore the importance of effective water management and proactive prevention in long-term care facilities. With residents often more vulnerable to Legionnaires’ disease, understanding how to manage water systems and reduce the risk of Legionella exposure is a critical part of protecting resident health and safety. This bootcamp will take a closer look at CMS water management expectations, Legionella risks and the steps providers can take to strengthen their facility’s water management program.
In this comprehensive program, participants will:
- Gain a practical understanding of applicable Life Safety Code requirements and their implementation within facility operations.
- Identify key areas surveyors evaluate during inspections and understand expectations for demonstrating compliance.
- Review required Life Safety documentation, recordkeeping practices and supporting evidence needed to demonstrate regulatory compliance.
- Examine CMS Emergency Preparedness E-Tags, applicable requirements and strategies for maintaining compliance.
- Understand the essential components of a water management program and the steps needed to develop, implement and maintain an effective plan.
- Recognize common deficiencies, understand potential compliance risks and implement strategies to prevent findings during surveys.
- Explore practical survey scenarios, common compliance challenges and corrective actions to strengthen facility readiness and operational effectiveness.

Speaker
Kenneth (Kenn) Daily, licensed nursing home administrator and founder of Elder Care Systems Group, has a long track record of working with long-term care professionals throughout the nation. In 2004, Kenn learned firsthand the critical importance of the Life Safety Code and emergency preparedness for senior living centers when a facility he managed suffered a significant fire event. No residents or staff members were injured but the facility sustained millions in damages, taking more than a year to complete the reconstruction.
Empowered by this experience, Kenn set to learn and share with health care professionals the importance of compliance with the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA’s) Life Safety Code to ensure the safest buildings for those served. Equally important is that facilities must be prepared for emergencies – which are never expected to occur, but do. With the recent implementation of CMS’s emergency preparedness mandate, Kenn has worked with hundreds of facilities to focus on being better prepared for the things out of our control. Kenn has said, “You cannot control the environment, but we can control the facility response.”
Today, Kenn is a leading life safety specialist focused on senior living and working throughout the county on life safety and emergency preparedness. He has served 20 years on the Ohio Health Care Association Board of Trustees and has chaired the Association’s Life Safety and Disaster Management Committee for more than 15 years. Kenn also serves on the American Health Care Association Life Safety – Disaster Management Committee as well as the NFPA Health Care Committee and its Executive Board.
Kenn is a frequent and engaging speaker, having lectured nationwide at professional conferences, trainings and other sponsored events, sharing insights on long-term care operations, quality, survey, disaster management and Life Safety Code, as well as authoring and editing numerous articles and professional manuals.
