U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently announced a new policy about “adjustment of status,” which is the process of applying for a Green Card while staying in the U.S. Under this policy, most people who are in the U.S. on temporary visas — such as student visas, work visas or tourist visas — will have to return to their home country and apply for a Green Card through a U.S. consulate there. USCIS stated that applying inside the U.S. will only be allowed in rare or “extraordinary” situations. However, this policy may face legal challenges going forward.
